Respite Care

Respite Care of Harford County, MD

Respite care is another service that Broad Creek Manor Assisted Living provides to northern Maryland and southern Pennsylvania families. But exactly what is respite care? In a nutshell, it provides temporary relief (respite) for caregivers. Caring for a senior loved one who needs help with bathing, dressing, eating, and other activities of daily living (ADLs) can be physically and emotionally exhausting.

That is especially true if your loved one suffers from a form of dementia, and has become forgetful, verbally abusive, or aggressive. You feel like you just need a break. That’s where respite services come in.

How Respite Care Works

There are two main types of respite care – in-home care and residential care. Here at Broad Creek Manor Assisted Living, your loved one stays with us. We do not send respite care staff to your home. In addition, respite services must be made in advance. We do not allow caregivers to show up unannounced to drop a loved one off. We handle respite services on a case-by-case basis/ length of stay. In general, you can schedule a respite stay for anywhere between a week and a month.

Residential respite care with us includes the same services and amenities that our long-term assisted living residents receive. That includes:

  • 24-Hour Care
  • Safe and Secure Environment
  • Medication Management
  • Fully Furnished Room
  • Daily Meals and Snacks
  • Assistance with ADLs
  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Planned Activities

Scheduling a respite stay is a great way to test out an assisted living facility if you think that might be a future option for your loved one. Planning ahead can make these decisions easier for everyone.

When you schedule respite care with us, we will ask you detailed questions and may request documentation regarding your loved one’s medical, physical, and emotional needs. This is so that we can best care for them while you take a much-needed break.

You can get a good night’s sleep, knowing that your loved one will be well taken care of, and have all of their needs met in a safe and secure environment. As an added bonus, they will likely make new friends while they’re here.

Common Reasons Families Schedule Respite Care

There are many reasons caregivers may schedule a respite care stay. Those include, but are not limited to:

  • Planned Vacation
  • Caregiver Health Issues
  • Caregiver Needs Surgery
  • Caregiver or Spouse Transferred for Work
  • Home Remodeling
  • Caregiver Needs a Break
  • Unforeseen Circumstances

Whatever the reason, scheduling is easy to do and a smart decision for you and your loved one. You do your best to care for them, but you also need to care for yourself and your home.

Who Pays for Respite Care?

It’s important to note that Medicare does not pay for residential respite services. If your loved one has long-term care insurance, that might help cover the costs. In some cases, Veterans’ benefits may help cover the cost. We can discuss your options when you call or schedule a visit.
